The Americas Circuit

History and Construction

  • Construction of the circuit began in 2011 and was completed in 2012. Its official opening was on October 21, 2012.
  • It was designed by renowned German circuit architect Hermann Tilke in collaboration with Tavo Hellmund, the event promoter.
  • The project cost $400 million, funded primarily by private investors and supported by the state of Texas.
  • It was built with the intention of hosting both the Formula 1 and MotoGP World Championships, in addition to other racing series.
  • The F1 United States Grand Prix was first held on November 18, 2012.

Design and Features

  • It was built in a hilly area outside of Austin, Texas, resulting in a track with significant elevation changes.
  • The most iconic feature is the steep climb on the home straight. This hairpin bend is located at the top of a blind hill.
  • The layout is distinguished by incorporating elements from other circuits, such as turns 3 through 6, inspired by the "S" corners at Silverstone, while turns 12 through 15 at Hockenheimring.
  • With a length of 5.513 km and 20 corners, it is a circuit that demands a balanced setup.
  • The circuit's design includes extensive asphalt run-off areas. This is a subject of debate, as it allows drivers to leave the track without a penalty.

Key Facts

  • The official race lap record is held by Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) with a time of 1:35.788, set in 2019.
  • The circuit is 5.513 kilometers long, with 56 laps, covering a total distance of 308.896 km.
  • The circuit was designed to accommodate large crowds, with a capacity for over 120,000 spectators.
  • LThe 251-foot-high observation tower, with its spiral design, offers a panoramic view of the entire circuit.
  • Designed to accommodate multiple motorsports disciplines, it features specially positioned grandstands and viewing areas.
