Born in Nastola, Finland, Bottas developed through karting circuits across Europe, competing at national and international level from a young age. His natural pace and clean racecraft earned him consistent results that attracted the attention of junior motorsport programs looking for structured talent. He moved into single-seaters with Formula Renault and progressed quickly through the European feeder series, establishing himself as one of the more complete young drivers of his generation.
Bottas won the GP3 Series championship in 2011, a result that effectively fast-tracked his path to Formula 1. Williams brought him in as a test and reserve driver for 2012 while he continued racing in other categories, and handed him a race seat for the 2013 season. He arrived without significant fanfare, but the quality was apparent from his early performances. Williams saw in him exactly what they needed: a driver who was fast, disciplined, and capable of bringing the car home without drama.
2013
Debut alongside Pastor Maldonado, one of the worst teammates anyone could ask for in terms of chaos around him. The car was slow and the season was forgettable. One points finish all year, eighth in the United States. He was better than the results showed, and most people knew it.
2014
Everything changed with the Mercedes engine. Six podiums, fourth in the championship, and a season where he consistently outperformed the more experienced Felipe Massa. The rest of the paddock started paying serious attention.
2015
Consolidated what 2014 had shown. Two more podiums, fifth in the standings, and the kind of measured consistency that was starting to attract bigger teams. Quiet year but a strong one.
2016
Harder season as the car lost ground to the competition. Eighth in the standings, no podiums. Still did everything asked of him but Williams was falling behind and there was a ceiling on what he could achieve there.
2017
Rosberg retired and Mercedes called. First race win in Russia, three victories total, and third in the championship. A genuinely strong debut season at the top team. The title conversation started here.
2018
Hamilton was on another level that year and the championship was never really a contest. Bottas won once, finished fifth, and had a frustrating season that included too many near-misses and mechanical retirements at the wrong moments.
2019
His best year. Four wins, runner-up in the championship, and a genuine feeling through the first half that the title was possible. Hamilton was simply better when it mattered. Still, second in the world is second in the world.
2020
Two wins, another runner-up finish, but Hamilton won 11 races and the comparison was brutal. The team was clearly building around Lewis and Bottas knew it. Second place again, but this time it felt more like a ceiling than a floor.
2021
One win in Turkey, third in the standings, and a season where the team dynamic around Verstappen versus Hamilton left Bottas as a supporting character. Mercedes dropped him at the end of the year. Alfa Romeo picked up the phone.
2022
Fresh start, different pressure. Led the team through their best season in years, finished tenth in the championship with 49 points, and scored a podium in Bahrain that felt genuinely earned. Better than anyone expected from that car.
2023
The car fell back, the points dried up, and the season was difficult to watch at times. Tenth in the standings but with just 27 points. Still the clear leader inside the team, still doing the job professionally. The trajectory was concerning though.
2024
Zero points. The whole season, zero. The C44 was one of the slowest cars on the grid and Sauber had already mentally moved on to 2026 and the Audi era. Bottas did everything right in terms of data collection and development feedback, but the results page was empty. His contract wasn't renewed. Twelve years in F1, ten wins, 67 podiums, and it ended like that.
2026
A return to the grid with Cadillac, the sport's new eleventh team, brought no immediate relief. Through fourteen rounds — including 19th at Monza and 18th at the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid — Bottas remains without a point, one of two Cadillac drivers still searching for the team's first score in Formula 1. Reliability and pace have both been in short supply for the fledgling operation.
