Jeddah Corniche Circuit

History and Construction

  • It was designed by circuit design expert Hermann Tilke, in close collaboration with his son, Carsten Tilke.
  • Construction of the circuit was remarkably fast. The project began in early 2021 and opened in December 2021.
  • Jeddah is a street circuit, meaning it uses public roads and is largely built and dismantled for each event.
  • The 2021 race was a historic event for the region and featured an intense battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
  • Since its debut, the circuit has undergone several minor modifications to improve safety and visibility.

Design and Features

  • It is the "fastest street circuit." Its long straights and the flowing nature of its high-speed corners make it a very fast track.
  • The track is 6.174 km long and has 27 corners, the most corners on the entire Formula 1 calendar.
  • It has three DRS zones. Two are on the long straights along the seafront, and the third is located between Turns 20 and 22.
  • The circuit is located on the Jeddah seafront, a spectacular location on the shores of the Red Sea.
  • Despite being a street circuit, the track has barriers very close to the track at most of its corners, leaving no room for error.

Key Facts

  • At 6,174 km, it is the second longest circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, behind only Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
  • The circuit has 27 corners, more than any other track on the F1 calendar.
  • It is the fastest street circuit in Formula 1, with average speeds exceeding 250 km/h.
  • In some sections, the track is so narrow that it feels like a "single-track circuit."
  • The circuit has a long-term contract. Although the initial agreement was for 15 years, there are future plans for a new permanent circuit in Qiddiya.
