Lusail International Circuit

History and Construction

  • The circuit was built in a record time of approximately one year, at an estimated cost of $58 million.
  • Inaugurated in 2004 with the Qatar MotoGP. Designed for motorcycle racing, it was also designed for other types of events.
  • A pioneer in night racing in 2008, it made history by installing a permanent, state-of-the-art outdoor lighting system.
  • The circuit underwent major and extensive renovations in 2022 and 2023 to meet the rigorous standards of Formula 1.
  • The use of artificial turf surrounding the track helps prevent sand from the nearby desert from blowing onto the track.

Design and Features

  • With a 5,380-kilometer layout and 16 corners, these corners include a mix of high-speed sections and technical sections.
  • A notable feature is the 1,068-kilometer main straight, which is one of the longest on the Formula 1 calendar.
  • The circuit was the first in the world to host a nighttime motorcycle racing event. Its lighting system uses 3,600 luminaires.
  • Its design was the work of Jassim Al-Mutawa, although it is not a Hermann Tilke design like many other modern circuits.
  • The renovations for Formula 1 included a new race control center, team facilities, and a Level 1 medical center.

Key Facts

  • The official lap record for the race was set by Lando Norris (McLaren) in 2024 with a time of 1:22.384.
  • The circuit, with a length of 5.419 km, requires 57 laps to complete a total distance of 308.611 km.
  • Following renovations, the circuit now has a capacity for around 52,000 spectators.
  • The circuit is located on the outskirts of Lusail, north of the Qatari capital, Doha.
  • It has hosted the MotoGP Grand Prix since 2004, Formula 1 since 2021, and the WEC Championship since 2024.
