Red Bull Ring Circuit
History and Construction
- Initial Construction: The original circuit was built in 1969 near Spielberg, replacing the dangerous Zeltweg Airfield circuit.
- Classic Era: With its fast, sweeping corners and elevation changes, it was a favorite with drivers, but was discontinued due to safety concerns in 1987.
- In the mid-1990s, the circuit was redesigned by Hermann Tilke and reopened in 1997 as the A1-Ring, with a shorter, safer layout.
- F1 abandoned the circuit after 2003, and the circuit fell into disuse until Red Bull acquired and revitalized it in the late 2000s.
- With renovations, the circuit reopened as the Red Bull Ring in 2011, combining modern safety with its original character.
Design and Features
- Layout: The Red Bull Ring has a 4.318 km (2.683 mi) layout with just 10 corners, combining long straights with tight braking.
- Gravity Drops: The circuit is known for its steep gradients, particularly the steep climb between Turns 1 and 3.
- High Speed: Despite its short length, the track allows for high average speeds, which favors engine power and good traction.
- Overtaking Opportunities: The wide straights and hard braking at Turns 1, 3, and 4 offer ample overtaking opportunities.
- Modern facilities: Updated by Red Bull, the track features state-of-the-art paddock and hospitality areas, while preserving its natural surroundings.
Key Facts
- Original name: Originally known as the Österreichring, it hosted the Austrian Grand Prix for many years.
- Other Events: The circuit regularly hosts other motorsport events, such as the Austrian Moto GP and the DTM.
- Iconic Landmark: The circuit features a gigantic steel sculpture of the bull, which measures 17.2 meters tall and weighs 68 tons.
- Public Areas: Outside of events, the circuit offers a variety of experiences, including driving experiences, tours, and free access to certain areas and the Fan Shop.
- The fastest lap is 1:05.619, achieved by Carlos Sainz Jr. driving a McLaren MCL35 in 2020.
