There are drivers who race. And there are drivers who embody the spirit of a race, a city, an entire tradition. Conor James Daly, born on December 15, 1991 in Noblesville, Indiana, is both. Son of Derek Daly, the legendary Irish driver who competed in Formula 1 and the Champ Car World Series, Conor grew up with the engine in his blood and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway less than an hour from home. This was not a weekend pastime. It was the context of his entire life.
Table Of Content
At 34, with thirteen Indianapolis 500 starts either completed or imminent, Conor Daly is one of the most respected and beloved names in the IndyCar paddock today. Not the fastest in qualifying, not the most decorated with series titles, but one of the most consistently present in the race that matters most and, without doubt, the one who connects most genuinely with the people filling the grandstands at Indianapolis Motor Speedway every May.
Early years: karting as inheritance
Daly’s karting roots go back to 2002, when he was just ten years old. It was natural: his father had been an F1 and Champ Car driver, and the family environment breathed motorsport. Progress was gradual but consistent, and it soon became clear that the young man from Indiana had something more than a family name. He had genuine talent of his own.
The American ladder and the leap to Europe
After establishing himself in American junior karting, Daly made the move to single-seaters in US junior formula. In 2010 he won the Star Mazda Series title, claiming seven victories across the season with Juncos Racing. A championship that opened the door to the next level.
In 2011 he won the Indy NXT race at the famous Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. And that same year he made the audacious move that would define his early career: he headed to Europe to compete in GP3, the Formula 1 support series. In 2012 and 2013 he competed in the category, finishing third in the 2013 standings and winning in Barcelona. That performance earned him an F1 test with Force India.
IndyCar: coming home and building a career
Daly made his IndyCar debut in 2013. What followed was a long, diverse and genuinely singular career. Over the years he raced for eleven different teams in IndyCar, earning the “super sub” label for his ability to step into any programme at any moment and perform from the very first lap.
His most notable series results: a pole position at Iowa in 2020, second place in Detroit in 2016, and third at Milwaukee in 2024. But where Daly has built his personal legend is at the Indianapolis 500. Five top-10 finishes across his starts there, including a memorable tenth in 2024 with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing from 29th on the grid, gaining 19 positions. With 82 total laps led at the 500, he is far from a secondary figure in the world’s greatest race.
2025 and 2026: the veteran who refuses to stop
In 2025, Daly competed full-time with Juncos Hollinger Racing, including an eighth-place finish at the Indianapolis 500 that extended his run of top-10 finishes in the race. For 2026, without a full-season seat available after being replaced by Rinus VeeKay at JHR, Daly found his way back to Indianapolis through Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and the sponsorship of Kingspan. The combination is familiar: in 2024 he raced with the same team and finished tenth.
When the deal was announced in March 2026, his words were what they always are. No pretension, no deflection. Only the honesty of a driver who knows exactly what he wants. “We’ve set some high goals with the No. 23. We want to win this race together.” The cold glass of milk in the winner’s circle remains the horizon. And every May, Conor Daly keeps chasing it.
