TAITO KATO: THE JAPANESE PRODIGY HONDA IS BETTING ON FOR THE FUTURE
In Japanese motorsport there is a tradition of identifying and protecting talent from a very young age. Honda has been doing this for decades through the Honda Formula Dream Project, the development programme that has launched generations of Japanese drivers toward the summits of motorsport. In 2024, that programme identified one of the most promising prospects in recent years: Taito Kato, a 16-year-old from Mie Prefecture who won the French F4 championship in his very first season in single-seaters.
Taito Kato was born on November 25, 2007 in Taki, Mie, a small city in Japan’s Kinki region. He grew up in a family environment with no direct connection to competitive motorsport, but from childhood displayed a natural attraction to engines and speed. In Japan, junior karting is a popular and well-organised activity, and it was there that Taito found his path. He began competing in karting regularly, accumulating experience on Japanese circuits where the discipline is taken with enormous technical seriousness.
In 2022 he took his first international step when he competed as a guest driver in one round of the FFSA Karting Championship in France, finishing second in the final but unclassified in the general standings due to his guest status. The following year, in 2023, he participated in the South Garda Winter Cup, one of the most prestigious karting events in Europe, finishing twelfth in the OK category final. These were exploratory forays into the European world, necessary steps to understand the competitive level on the other side of the globe.
That same year, 2023, was the one that changed his life forever: Kato completed the training programme at the Honda Racing School Suzuka in the Formula Class and earned the scholarship that allowed him to join the Honda Formula Dream Project (HFDP). This programme, led by former F1 driver Takuma Sato, is the structure Honda uses to develop its most promising young talents with the long-term goal of reaching the highest level of motorsport.
In 2024, at just 16 years old and in his first full season in single-seaters, Kato debuted in the French Formula 4 Championship under the FFSA Academy banner. What happened during that season exceeded all expectations. Kato won five races, took 12 podiums and achieved 16 top-five finishes in 21 races, claiming the French F4 championship at 16 in a debut season that left European observers speechless. Takuma Sato himself travelled to the Circuit Paul Ricard to witness his protégé seal the title in person.
The 2025 season was spent in Europe competing in the Formula Regional European Championship (FRECA) with ART Grand Prix, finishing seventh in the overall standings. He also participated in the Formula Regional Middle East Championship, where he won a race in his rookie season. These experiences broadened his knowledge of European circuits and conditions, preparing him for the next step.
In 2026, at 18 years of age, Taito Kato stepped up to Formula 3 with ART Grand Prix, one of the most decorated teams in the junior single-seater ladder, joining a lineup that also includes Kanato Le and Maciej Gładysz. Although he competes under the French flag for administrative reasons, Kato is deeply Japanese in his identity and his connection to the Honda programme.
It is worth noting that Kato is not directly affiliated with an F1 team’s academy, but his relationship with Honda is equivalent in many respects: Honda supplies power units in Formula 1 and has clear interests in developing Japanese talent toward the top level of the sport.
Away from the track, Taito Kato projects the image of a serious, disciplined and deeply grateful young man. In his statements he consistently mentions Honda, Takuma Sato and his support network as pillars of his development. The maturity he demonstrates both on and off the car for someone his age is striking and reflects well on the education he has received at home and in the racing schools where he has grown.
Do you think Taito Kato has the talent and the support structure to follow in Yuki Tsunoda’s footsteps and become the next Japanese driver to reach Formula 1?
