Dream pole for Russell, nightmare for Antonelli: the qualifying session that could shape the championship in Azerbaijan

The most dominant pole of Russell’s career
George Russell didn’t need to force anything on his final lap to make clear that Baku belonged to him. With a 1:42.526, he claimed his fifth pole of the season and did it with a 0.837s margin over second place, the biggest gap of his entire Formula 1 career. “Probably the biggest margin of my whole career,” Russell admitted after the session, describing the lap as something that “felt really sweet” despite having started Q1 struggling with front-end lockups.

Behind him, Charles Leclerc put Ferrari on the front row with a 1:43.363, while Oscar Piastri completed the top three by just a thousandth of a second over Leclerc, a margin that makes clear just how tight the fight was for the rest of the positions, a world away from the procession Russell put together at the front.
The crash that cost Antonelli his qualifying
But the biggest story of the day had nothing to do with who ended up on top, and everything to do with who was eliminated early. Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, clipped the Turn 1 wall during Q1 and suffered significant suspension damage. His race engineer, Pete Bonnington, confirmed over the radio that the damage was terminal and that there was no time to repair it before the session ended. Antonelli limped back to the pits, but that was the end of his participation: qualifying closed out for him in 16th place.
It’s a double blow for Mercedes. On one hand, they lose their championship leader from a grid slot that seriously complicates his chances of scoring meaningful points this weekend. On the other, Russell will have to navigate the race without his teammate’s strategic support, no small detail on a circuit like Baku, where managing traffic and slipstreams can define the result.
Verstappen, far from where he expected to be
The other name that grabbed attention was Max Verstappen, who, after showing competitive pace through Q2, ended up eighth, well short of what Red Bull was hoping for. The Dutchman complained throughout the session that the car “is bottoming like crazy on the front, I can’t brake,” an issue that never got resolved even heading into Q3. To make matters worse, he had to abort his final Q3 lap due to a yellow flag, triggered when Lando Norris ran off track, stripping away any chance of improving his position on that final attempt.
Against that backdrop, the one bright spot for Red Bull was Isack Hadjar, who qualified fourth with a 1:43.500 in what was his first qualifying session back since July. Outqualifying his teammate, the reigning world champion, on his return from a wrist injury is a statement that didn’t go unnoticed in the paddock.
What the rest of the session left behind
Audi had a qualifying to forget despite bringing an upgraded package to the car: both Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg were eliminated in Q1. On the brighter side, Franco Colapinto made the most of a well-timed tow behind teammate Pierre Gasly (who qualified seventh) to sneak into 10th place. Lance Stroll, meanwhile, had an early lockup in Q1 that sent him off track, though he avoided the barriers, and ended up down in 21st.
What’s ahead for the race
With Russell starting from a pole that looks nearly untouchable for the rest of the field and Antonelli stuck back in 16th, the championship picture could shift considerably this weekend. The race is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, and with Verstappen looking for redemption from eighth and Hadjar showing he can go toe to toe with his world champion teammate, Baku is shaping up to be a far more open race than the pole result alone might suggest.

Russell delivered the pole of his career just as his championship-leading teammate crashed out in Q1, a combination that could reshape the title fight this weekend. Do you think Antonelli can salvage real damage limitation from P16, or is this the moment Russell truly takes control of the standings?
