Norris Takes Zandvoort Pole, But He’s Not Convinced the Car Will Hold Up

Lando Norris came into this qualifying session needing to answer back, and he did it in the best way possible: pole position at Zandvoort, his second of the year, by just a tenth over Russell. In a session where the top four were separated by less than two tenths, every thousandth of a second mattered.

A nail-biting Q3

The number that sums up this session is simple: 0.142 seconds covered first to fourth. Norris set a 1:11.163, Russell was 0.102s back, Antonelli just 0.031s further behind, and Piastri closed out the quartet nine thousandths off his teammate. That’s how tight the season has become between Mercedes, McLaren and company there’s no room to relax, not even for one lap.

Hamilton put Ferrari into fifth, though this time it was Leclerc who ended up behind his teammate, a reversal of what’s been the usual order this year. The Monegasque finished sixth, three tenths off Norris, with Verstappen seventh another qualifying session where the Dutchman couldn’t crack the front-runners in his home race.

Lawson, the top 10 surprise

If there’s one name that jumps out of this table, it’s Liam Lawson. Eighth, ahead of Bortoleto and Lindblad, in what’s probably his best qualifying result of the season so far. Red Bull needed a positive signal after a difficult weekend for Verstappen, and Lawson delivered it, even if from the other side of the garage.

Bortoleto keeps confirming Audi got their signing right: ninth, back in the fight for Q3 in an increasingly competitive midfield. Lindblad rounds out the top 10 in his rookie season, a result that keeps up the good run he’s been showing over the last several races.

Who missed out

Gasly leads the group that didn’t make it past Q2, just a tenth away from breaking into the fight for the top ten. Behind him, Tsunoda, Hülkenberg and Colapinto round out a midfield where the margins remain razor-thin we’re talking thousandths of a second between consecutive positions in several cases.

Ocon and Albon were the last two out in Q2, both with laps around the 1:13.1 mark, proof that even reaching Q2 guarantees nothing if the perfect lap doesn’t show up at the right moment.

The back of the grid

Sainz opens the list of Q1 eliminations, followed by Alonso, Stroll, Bearman, Bottas and Pérez closing out qualifying in 22nd. A tough result for Aston Martin, who see both cars out early, and for Cadillac, still searching for their place in the competitive end of the grid.

Is Norris’s pole enough to turn into victory tomorrow? Recent history at Zandvoort doesn’t always reward whoever starts first and with Russell, Antonelli and Piastri this close on the clock, the race looks set to be just as tight as this qualifying session was.
